Tate Britain opens a sweeping retrospective devoted to James McNeill Whistler, on view from 21 May to 27 September 2026. Billed as the first major European exhibition of Whistler\u0019s work in 30 years, it assembles world-famous paintings alongside rarely, or never seen, pieces. Entry is free for Members.<\/p>\n
The exhibition presents Whistler as both a boldly experimental artist and a cosmopolitan celebrity. It traces a practice that pioneered new techniques and pursued ethereal visions of modern life, spanning from works made in his teens in St. Petersburg to enigmatic late self-portraits. Across exquisite portraits, drawings, prints and designs, the show frames an artist who, in disrupting Victorian conventions, aimed at truth, beauty and progress.<\/p>\n
Among the featured works are Symphony in White, No. 2: The Little White Girl<\/em> (1864), Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1<\/em> (1871, Mus\u0000e9e d\u0000b4Orsay, Paris, France), Wapping<\/em> (1860\u0000e2\u000080\u0000931864, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, John Hay Whitney Collection, 1982), and Nocturne: Blue and Gold – Old Battersea Bridge<\/em> (c.1872\u0000e2\u000080\u0000935). The Whistler\u0019s Finish Research and Conservation Project was supported by The Lunder Foundation, with associated research supported by the Manton Historic British Art Scholarship Fund.
