At St. Vincent Medical Center, 2131 W. Third Street, Los Angeles, the pop-up exhibition Hospital of Emotions<\/em> turns former hospital rooms into charged, site-specific installations. On view through July 31, 2026, the project spans four floors and invites visitors to navigate a sequence of themed departments: beginning with Resilience<\/strong> at the top and moving through Joy<\/strong>, Sadness<\/strong>, Gratitude<\/strong>, Anger<\/strong>, Compassion<\/strong>, Hope<\/strong>, and Fear<\/strong>. Seventy artists from across the globe were asked to respond to specific prompts, and many make incisive use of the building\u0019s infrastructure and tools of care.<\/p>\n

From Resilience to Fear<\/h2>\n

Medical beds, beakers, and even room signage become materials in the hands of the artists. In Room #14, Kunna Haan scatters medical beakers and glass tubes, while Emily Strange packs Room #80 with hundreds of syringes. The contrast between restraint and excess is a throughline: Lenny Gerard\u0019s Room #4 in the Resilience department is pared back and witty\u0014white surge protectors sprout small green plants against a Pepto-Bismol pink ground\u0014and Dongpu Ling\u0019s Room #78 suspends clear, floating figures. Swinging to maximalist abandon, Room #20 by Guy \u001cDioz\u001d Bloom blankets the space in bright, chaotic graffiti where larger-than-life monsters stand in for hidden emotions, a visual feast that also tightens into a palpable claustrophobia. In Room #17, Allison Reber stages a resilient nature\u0019s comeback, with plants pressing through floor tiles and blossoms overtaking both bed and medical books.<\/p>\n

Throughout, the existing environment matters: imposing operating equipment still hanging from ceilings and cautionary door signs are folded into many works. Javier Estrada\u0019s Twister-themed Room #07, sited in the Joy section, repeats the party game\u0019s primary-color dots until they nearly obscure machinery and signage; human-like figures punctuate the space, while a looped video on a retro-shaped television and its soundtrack lend the scene a deliberately macabre edge.<\/p>\n
