Two days later, on Sept. 18, 2026, musicians performed at a rally opposing the closure of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. At stake is the direction of a national institution long described as a \u001cliving memorial\u001d to John F. Kennedy.<\/p>\n
Congress created the Kennedy Center and defines its governance, controls appropriations for construction and repairs, and supports part of its operating budget. A board of trustees, authorized by Congress, steers the mission and secures most earned and contributed income. Operations are also subject to review by the Internal Revenue Service and by federal courts.<\/p>\n
That framework has frayed. A public clash between Trump and Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat, accompanies two U.S. District Court lawsuits now before Judge Christopher R. Cooper. The administration\u0019s track record elsewhere shows its willingness to act first: In October 2025, Trump had the White House East Wing torn down without prior congressional approval and added a new helipad on the grounds. After Trump\u0019s February 2025 takeover, performance revenue dropped sharply, well before he announced plans to shutter the complex for major repairs; artists canceled engagements and routine bookings. For now, the board chaired by Trump makes the pivotal calls, while federal litigation narrows or delays some moves.
