Known for meticulous, vibrant paintings that fuse flora and fauna, Ching conjures elemental forces like fire and water alongside the personalities of mammals, birds, and marine life, channeling nature as a source of wonder and solace rooted in his upbringing on O\u0019ahu, Hawai\u0019i.

Elemental symbolism and intuitive process

Portraits of owls, hummingbirds, fish, orchids, and more anchor the new body of work, which Ching shaped with an intuitive approach. \u001cThere were pieces that I worked on and tried to force to be one thing, only for them to define themselves as another. And there were pieces that seemed to float down from the muses and land neatly at the end of my brush,\u001d he says in a statement. A gallery statement frames the exhibition as a response to the socio-political realities of recent years and the daily challenges and rewards of parenthood and partnership, invoking power, resilience, mutual cooperation, and a vivid sense of hope.

Earthly materials accrue layered meaning: rocks evoke stability and endurance, while \u001cWater, both a force of opposition and support, serves as wisdom to find ways around obstacles to get past them, following the path of least resistance when needed,\u001d the gallery says, nodding to the show\u0019s title. The gallery adds that Path of Least Resistance \u001cis a reflection of the artist\u0019s inner world and personal life,\u001d noting, \u001cAt a moment when the demands of every day have become increasingly consuming, Ching has found himself distilling larger ideas into simpler and purer form, allowing the work to emerge from more personal experiences, emotions, and small moments that define his present state of mind.\u001d

Works that look closely at time, spirit, and surveillance

Narratives crystallize across individual canvases. In Dandilion, the stages of the common dandelion become markers of time, tenderly aligned with a lioness and her cubs. Thin Air depicts a floral-headed cockatoo gripping a wisp of smoke, a nod to nature\u0019s transience and the effects of human-induced habitat loss. Spiritual currents course through a paradoxically flaming shark in Force of Nature and the third eye of a lynx in Ajna\u0019s Path in Bloom, which references the sixth chakra in Hindu yogic philosophy.

Ching also addresses crucial social themes: 1984 pays homage to George Orwell\u0019s novel, with eyes peering from the centers of tropical flowers to reflect the book\u0019s persistent motif of nonstop, ubiquitous surveillance. Across the exhibition, these symbolic hybrids balance ferocity and care, inviting viewers to consider endurance, adaptation, and the quiet power of natural systems.

Path of Least Resistance runs October 3 to November 7 at KP Projects in Los Angeles.

Vía thisiscolossal.com

Jon Ching\u0019s solo exhibition Path of Least Resistance opens at KP Projects in Los Angeles from October 3 to November 7, bringing meticulously rendered hybrids of flora and fauna that channel elemental forces and symbolic themes across works like Dandilion, Thin Air, Force of Nature, Ajna\u0019s Path in Bloom, and 1984.

[20

post-3580","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-happening-now
["GET
