MacArthur Foundation has named mixed-media artist <strong>Christine Sun Kim<\/strong> one of its <strong>2026 MacArthur Fellows<\/strong>. She is among <strong>20 recipients<\/strong> this year, alongside artists <strong>Rodney McMillian<\/strong>, <strong>Chip Thomas<\/strong>, and <strong>Vincent Valdez<\/strong>. Each fellow will receive <strong>USD 800,000<\/strong> disbursed over five years to support their research and practice.<\/p>\n<p>Born in California in <strong>1980<\/strong> and based in <strong>Berlin<\/strong>, Kim has been Deaf since birth. After being told that no university courses in graphic design offered interpreters, she completed a <strong>BFA at the School of Visual Arts, New York (2006)<\/strong>, followed by an <strong>MFA in sound and music at Bard College (2013)<\/strong>. Early in her career, she drew on her own experience as a Deaf person to examine how communication moves across cultures. In <strong>2019<\/strong>, she participated in the <strong>Whitney Biennial<\/strong> with <em>Degrees of Deaf Rage<\/em> (<strong>2018\u201319<\/strong>), a series of <strong>charcoal illustrations<\/strong> expressing her frustration with hurdles encountered in cultural institutions. She received the <strong>Ford Foundation\u2019s Disability Future Fellowship<\/strong> in <strong>2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:left\">Practice and recognition<\/h2>\n<p>Kim\u2019s practice has expanded to encompass <strong>performance<\/strong>, <strong>music<\/strong>, and <strong>interactive installation<\/strong>, often deploying dry humor to raise awareness of Deaf issues and to probe societal, cultural, and bodily relationships to language and sound.
